This piece was written for saxophonist, Brian Sacawa. I was inspired by his passionate playing and his love for the saxophone. The first movement started as a clarinet solo, which I later changed after hearing Brian's intense playing and musicality. I found it challenging to write for this solo instrument and I tried to utilize the higher and lower registers as if they were conversing with one another. I also wanted it to be snappy and energetic. I started writing the 2nd movement shortly after the death of a dear uncle of mine. I could not help thinking of him as I was writing this movement. He was a good man who had a sense of humor. I envisioned a New Orleans-style funeral, starting off slow and introspective but then gradually becoming lively and celebratory. I knew that Brian would be able to create a beautiful, soulful tone that would convey its essence. |
